Purley Pool announcement - Key milestone

As your local Purley councillors, we, alongside Mayor Perry stood on a manifesto pledge to re-open Purley Pool following its closure by the previous Labour administration. It was at the heart of our campaign. When canvassing, many told us that they were voting for the local conservatives (sometimes for the first time) because of this commitment. We heard the stories of all the local primary schools, disabled groups and elderly who relied on the pool.

We are excited and encouraged by today's announcement that Polaska will submit plans for the regeneration of Purley High Street, which includes a new six-lane swimming pool, training pool gym, soft play and café alongside later living development. Having seen the plans, it is ambitious, with proposals for a new public square, an improved walkway to Purley railway station and new shops.

Whilst this is different to what we originally would have envisaged at the start of our administration, it was clear that the current pool couldn't be re-opened due to extensive disrepair, and whilst we all need to scrutinise the plans in more detail, the fact that it prioritises developing a more vibrant district centre is hugely welcome.

We want residents, local businesses and community groups to be involved as much as possible and we are delighted that they will be consulted ahead of a planning application submitted to the Council.

Polaska has kindly organised two public exhibitions at Christ Church in Purley. The first is on Tuesday 20th June from 5-8pm and Friday 23rd June from 4-7pm. There will also be a stall at the Purley fête on Saturday 24th June (12-4pm). We hope to see as many of you there as possible.

The Mayor’s press release can be found here and the consultation website here.
