Shirley North
Shadow Cabinet Deputy for Children, Young People and Learning

I moved to Croydon when I got married and have been here ever since, I am a widow with two grown up children, Claire and William. My special interests are Health, Social Services and Education, I have always been very involved in the community and was Chair of Croydon Citizens Advice Bureau and sat on the Board of the first Primary Care Group after the transition to fund holding GPs.

I have been a Governor of Harris Academy since the school opened in 2006 and worked for the charity Mencap, hence my interest in disability issues.

Since being elected to represent Shirley I have served on the Children and Young People Scrutiny Sub Committee and Fostering Panel which has enabled me to develop my interest and concern for the welfare of children and young people.

The Intensification of Croydon: People raise their Voice

Sunday, 20 February, 2022

Dear all,

Here is an update on Croydon Council’s proposed Local Plan, in which they seek to massively increase the number of properties through “Intensification” (their own description).

Greenview Avenue

Greenview Avenue, a view at last

Thursday, 30 September, 2021

Greenview Avenue - its name says it all: family homes around a green space.

The misery that is LTNs

Tuesday, 31 August, 2021

I parked the car in South Norwood yesterday because I had to visit my dentist and there was the consultation for LTNs, where were they ?  I strained to read the notices placed on lamp posts, eight feet in the air that would only be readable if you had 20/20 vision and were seven foot tall.

Shirley Neighbourhood Care

Saturday, 28 August, 2021

I had the pleasure to visit Shirley Neighbourhood Care yesterday in their new home, the Baptist Church in Wickham Road.

Croydon in crisis

Wednesday, 18 August, 2021

I travelled through Croydon yesterday from the North to the South, it was sad and depressing, this Council has been in power for eight years. Years of mismanagement, lack of governance and complete indifference to the concerns of the residents.

Cabinet

Tuesday, 8 June, 2021

I logged onto Cabinet last evening and was subjected again to a lecture, apparently residents must understand what this administration tells us,  debate was stifled and challenge was not allowed.

Brick by Brick incompetence

Tuesday, 8 June, 2021

I visited Longheath Gardens last Friday and met with tenants who have the misfortune to live next to a Brick by Brick new build.

Inter Faith Community

Sunday, 28 March, 2021

I was delighted to join with others at an inter faith meeting organised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I was pleased to learn so much about the origins of the different faiths we have in Croydon.

Shirley caring again

Saturday, 27 March, 2021

Still in lockdown but a lovely spring day so feeling positive, I arrived at the Methodist Church in Shirley to find volunteers and the redoubtable Suzy organising an Easter parcel for the elderly and vulnerable in the Shirley community.

A sad night for Croydon residents

Tuesday, 9 March, 2021

The Budget Council meeting took place last night, I had to sit through a meeting where once again this Labour administration refused to take any responsibility for their mismanagement.
