Meeting with the Police in Norbury

The Norbury Conservatives and I have been speaking with residents and local businesses in Norbury Park over the last few months. There have been a number of gang murders and attempted murders in the area using knives, which have deeply upset and disturbed the community.

Local Businesses such as ‘Niki’s Café’, ‘The Bar-B-Q Pit’, ‘Green Lane Tyres’, ‘Ocean Breeze Fish Bar’ and 'Corners Chicken & Ribs’ on Green Lane, and local residents have continuously expressed concern about the increasing amount of violent crime, loitering and anti-social behaviour around the shops and restaurants on Green Lane and the surrounding area. The current atmosphere is discouraging residents from using these amenities, which in turn affects their businesses as a result.

Steve O’Connell the Conservative GLA member for Croydon and Sutton, supported by the Norbury Conservatives, organised the public meeting with the Metropolitan Police Borough Commander for Croydon Jeff Boothe. The meeting was held at St Oswald's Church, on the 7th December 2017. Local residents and business owners were able to put their concerns to the police directly about crime in the area, the meeting had a very impressive 70+ members of the local community in attendance! It is very clear Norbury has a very passionate and active community; the Norbury Conservatives want to actively help encourage and develop this passion into positive change for the local community as a whole.

The police confirmed that they are, together with the help of the local community, clamping down on gang violence, loitering and antisocial behaviour in and around Green Lane, and CCTV cameras are being installed.

The Police stated that their teams jointly rely on residents to report suspicious and antisocial behaviour directly to them for action and concentrate on areas of concern.

The most effective way to do this is via Twitter by tweeting your complaint or concern directly to @MPSUpperNorwood or @MPSNorbury. This enables the local police team to understand what is of main concern locally and concentrate their effort and action more effectively.

The Norbury Conservatives encourage local residents to form or join community groups such as a neighbourhood watch scheme. It is an excellent information gathering process for local residents which keeps them informed and up to date with local issues, so together as a community in conjunction with local police teams, we can all help improve our community for the better!

We take the issue of crime extremely seriously and will be working with the community and the police to try and dramatically reduce crime in the area. It is not acceptable that residents do not feel safe answering their doors or letting their children outside the house unaccompanied. We hope to make this a thing of the past.

WATCH: One Year in Office

Wednesday, 10 May, 2023

Today is the one year anniversary of my election as the first ever Executive Mayor of Croydon.

I will always be grateful for the support that Croydon's voters gave me in that election. I have never taken this support for granted.
