Chris Philp MP and I paid a visit to Margaret Roper Catholic Primary School in Purley this morning. We enjoyed meeting the Head, Mr Mooney, staff and pupils from different year groups.
After an excellent tour from four lovely year 6 pupils who from the senior pupil leadership team and a pop-in to a few classrooms where we saw pupils learning maths, English and RE, we then went down for a Q&A with pupils of different ages, Mr Mooney and Y3 teacher, Mrs Garcia which covered a huge range of topics including:
- Road safety and parking issues in Purley
- Littering issues
- So many flats/planning matters
- What Chris's role is as an MP
- Views on education
- The war in Ukraine and what can be done to secure peace
I was very impressed by the calibre of questions from a very well-informed group of students. On road safety, I have been working closely with Mr Mooney, parents and Council officers on measures that could help the situation, particularly on Plough Lane and Foxley Lane. The Council are currently consulting on HGV restrictions for Plough Lane and officers have put in a bid for traffic calming measures using section 106 funding. I await these outcomes and will continue to push.
It was also good to talk to the Y6 pupils and Mr Mooney about their secondary school choices and most seemed happy to get their first-choice. We also had a chance to wish them luck for their all-important SATs in a few weeks time
Thank you to the school for an enjoyable morning!
