It was a privilege to attend the VE Commerations outside the Town Hall in Croydon with my ward colleague, Cllr Simon Brew, starting with the raising of the flag at 9am, a silence at noon and then a lighting of the beacon at 9.30pm.
It was a poignant, memorable day and a chance for us all the reflect on the sacrifices an incredible generation made during the Second World War. It was wonderful to see Purley resident, Colonel John Power be part of the first two services and declare that' we will remember them'.
Near the Town Hall, by St George's Walk, there was a display and I especially enjoyed seeing the photo of Landsdowne Road, Purley where residents held a street party to commemorate VE Day in 1945 and over in Purley, it was a delight to see bunting in the district centre.
