Coulsdon Medical Centre and Kia

A number of residents have queried the preponderance of Kia’s cars on the former CALAT car park where our new medical centre will be built. Kia have been given temporary permission to use the site for their cars following an agreement with the Council.

The agreement with Kia is a 12-month licence with a 28-day notice period for termination. It will produce some much needed income for the Council during the project planning phase of the medical centre’s development.  It’s a win-win situation for Coulsdon and Croydon and our council taxpayers.  This will NOT delay the development.  We thought it important to clarify this, as the medical centre is key to improved health provision in Coulsdon.

Roundabout Near Aldi

We met with Croydon’s Parking Design Manager last week to again consider options for the roundabout in Coulsdon.  The traffic problems were clear for all to see.  Is there a viable solution?  These were the options raised ….

Option 1 – to create a south bound slip road into Aldi’s car park.  This was discussed but the danger to pedestrians crossing two Brighton Road lanes at such a key point made the option unrealistic. The costs would be a significant factor too.

Option 2 – introduce a yellow box junction at the roundabout.  These are very rare on mini roundabouts but the idea is being taken away for further investigation.

Option 3 - the possibility of CCTV at the roundabout for the purpose of alleviating the Aldi car parking problems (but not the parking outside Tesco problem).  This is being investigated further.  We’ll report back when we hear more.

We are of course open to further suggestions.

We also discussed introducing CCTV as a means of evidencing and fining motorists who park outside Tesco in Coulsdon, usually to use the hole in the wall cash machine.  You don’t need to stand at the roundabout for very long to see motorists parking illegally at this dangerous point, causing dangers to fellow motorists.  Apparently, the law prohibits cameras at such a location so that is not an option.  We’ve asked for an even further increase to parking enforcement by Croydon’s officers to help deter this dangerous activity.

Car Park – Aldi

We were very disappointed that a recent amendment to an approved planning application to allow only customers of Aldi to use the car park.  Chris Philp MP, hundreds of local residents and residents’ associations joined us in strongly objecting to the proposals.

As this change was classed as a 'variation', planning officers were able to approve the amendment without taking the decision to the Planning Committee.

Ullswater Industrial Estate, Coulsdon

We have received complaints from residents around the Estate as illegal car meets have been taking place at night time.  Cars speeding (doughnuting it’s called) around parts of the Estate are of course dangerous and the noise a real nuisance to local residents.  The police are involved as are Council officers.  Councillors and Council officers have this last week visited the site and identified the private land where the activities are taking place.  The land owners are now to be approached to make sure they are aware of the activities and take steps to stop this public nuisance and danger on their land.

Fairdene Road Flooding

Recent heavy downpours have highlighted a number of flooding problems in our patch including on Fairdene and Downs Road.  A site visit took place last week when we met with residents, a representative of a residents’ association and a senior engineer from Conway. The problems were highlighted to the engineer who will now produce a report so a decision can be taken on remedial action.
