We wanted to provide residents with an update on the future of the Bourneview railway crossing in Kenley.
Before doing so, we want to acknowledge that any discussion about the crossing will understandably be difficult for many people, following the tragic accident in January 2025 in which a young boy, Jaiden, sadly lost his life. Our thoughts remain with Jaiden's family and friends, and with everyone in the local community and school communities who continue to be affected by this tragedy.
As your local ward councillors, our role is to represent residents and ensure that your views are heard. We recognise that there are strongly held opinions on the future of the crossing, and we have made sure those views have been communicated in detail to the Council.
The decision on whether the crossing remains closed or reopens is not one that sits with ward councillors. It is an operational decision that will be made by the Council in conjunction with Network Rail, taking into account a range of statutory, legal and safety considerations, including the findings and recommendations in the Rail Accident Report.
The Council and Network Rail have been progressing a range of safety improvements at Bourne View Level Crossing, including the installation of a new Miniature Stop Light system and associated crossing upgrades. Additional safety measures are also being developed by the Council.
To allow further safety, engagement, and educational activities to be completed, the temporary closure of the crossing has been extended until 11 February 2027. This extension does not represent a decision to permanently close or reopen the crossing. No final decision has yet been made regarding the future operation of the crossing.
The Council and Network Rail will use the coming months to undertake further work, including rail safety education and awareness initiatives with local schools, engagement with residents living closest to the crossing, and any additional activities considered necessary to support decision making.
We recognise that the continued closure has caused inconvenience for residents and pedestrians who regularly use this route. We appreciate the community's patience and understanding while this important work is completed.
