Croydon Council has taken steps to make the local elections on 7 May more accessible and inclusive for people with visual impairments. For the first time, residents will be able to use a McGonagle Reader to vote independently, confidently and in secret.
The McGonagle Reader is an audio and tactile voting device recommended by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). It uses audio and embossed braille markings to help users to navigate and mark their choices independently. The tactile device can also be used alongside large print ballot papers to support people with limited vision.
Previously, residents with visual impairments had to be supported by a companion to cast their vote on the ballot paper.
The Council has been working with local charities, such as Croydon Vision and Age UK Croydon to better understand the support needed for accessible voting and test the new equipment.
Nicola Newman, Chief Executive Officer at Croydon Vision, said: "We’ve been sharing information about the new arrangements with our members and supporting people to understand their voting options, including registering for postal votes. Feedback from our members has been very positive, with many welcoming the additional support and choice available.
“We are offering demonstrations of the McGonagle Reader, so voters can familiarise themselves with the equipment ahead of polling day if they wish.”
The new equipment is part of the Council’s wider programme to improve access to voting for people with disabilities and builds on a range of measures already in place.
Presiding Officers working at polling stations across Croydon receive accessibility training ahead of the election and are available to support any voter who needs help.
All polling stations are wheelchair accessible, with temporary ramps provided where needed and low-level polling booths available, and nobody with a disability will be expected to wait in a queue.
Additional support such as magnifying glasses, extra lighting and specially designed pencil grips will also be available on polling day. Assistance animals are welcome inside polling stations.
