Lower Road in Kenley

UPDATE 2 February 2026

SGN has indicated that the works are now likely to start on 16th March.

---

SGN has written to residents of Lower Road to let them know that the utility will be replacing their old metal gas mains with new plastic pipes.

Their contractor, WCB Utilities will be carrying out the works, the works, once they begin, will last around 6 weeks. However, the date that they start is unclear. The letter to Lower Road residents stated Monday 2nd February, but the notification on Causeway street works notification site states 16th March. SGN has said that another letter to Lower Road residents with the start date will be delivered soon.

The works means that the road will be closed to through traffic. However, residents will still be able to access homes and businesses will remain open. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained, with a signed diversion put in place for vehicles.

The gas supply to home shouldn’t be affected, but if they need to turn of the supply, residents will be given 7 days’ notice.

Kenley Councillors wrote to SGN to ask for further clarification on the impact of parking and on the level or disruption, and particularly as the southern end of the road is a healthy school street. SGN responded to say:

“The works on Lower Road will be carried out in sections to allow parking to be maintained where possible. Road boards will be used when it is safe to do so while excavations are taking place within parking areas. In some instances, this may not be possible, and affected road users will be asked to park further along the road.

Lower Road will be completed under a road closure, with one end of the road closed to prevent through traffic. Deliveries and access will still be maintained via a signed diversion route.

When we begin this phase of the works, we will initially implement a closure on Little Roke Road before moving into Lower Road.

I will also be contacting the school today with full details so the information can be circulated to parents.”

You can track progress of the works on the Causeway website at https://one.network/?GB147827154.
