Back in July, we reported that Little Roke Avenue would be closing over the summer to allow for substantial improvement works. We’re pleased to confirm that these works have now been completed on time.
The project included:
- Installation of new soakaways and chambers, along with the replacement of existing gully pots, to tackle frequent flooding near numbers 91 and 94
- Deep cleaning, jetting, and CCTV surveying of the drainage infrastructure
- Full carriageway resurfacing and new road markings
- Implementation of new parking arrangements
- Thorough road cleansing before reopening.
Parking has always been an issue on this road, and we wanted to ensure that the new arrangements would not reduce the number of available spaces. Initially, officers proposed yellow-lining one side of the road, which we felt would cause significant problems, so we asked them to review the scheme.
As a result, residents were consulted on two options:
- Introducing yellow lines along one side of the road, or
- Implementing a footway parking scheme to maintain as much parking as possible while ensuring fire engines could access the lower end of the road.
An overwhelming 94% of residents supported the footway parking scheme, which has resulted in the loss of just one parking space overall.
The improvements mean that Little Roke Avenue now has adequate drainage, a newly resurfaced carriageway, and better-planned parking. The revised layout provides greater space between vehicles, allowing larger vehicles to pass safely without damaging parked cars.
Importantly, emergency services now have clear access to all properties on the road, and the changes will also make it easier for waste collection vehicles to collect bins efficiently.
