Croydon’s Conservative Executive Mayor, Jason Perry, has renewed his call for the scrapping of Sadiq Khan’s outer-London ULEZ zone following a major new University of Birmingham study showing that the 2023 expansion had no significant impact on air quality.
The study found that while the original 2019 central-London ULEZ achieved some success in reducing harmful emissions, last year’s outer-London expansion had “no measurable effect” on nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides, or particulate matter.
Mayor Jason Perry said the findings confirmed what Croydon residents have known all along – that the expansion was an unnecessary, unfair tax on those least able to afford it.
“This study is a 100% vindication of the campaign we fought against Sadiq Khan’s reckless ULEZ expansion.
The University of Birmingham’s research confirms that the 2023 outer-London ULEZ had no significant impact on nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides or particulates. In other words - it punished people for nothing.
Families, small businesses and tradespeople with older vehicles - often vulnerable residents, hardworking parents and struggling traders trying to make ends meet - have been hit hardest by Labour. They’ve been forced to pay £12.50 a day just to get to work, deliver goods, or visit relatives.
The original central London ULEZ made a difference, but by 2023 compliance in outer London was already above 90%. This latest expansion was simply unnecessary.
Labour’s war on motorists must end. It’s time for common sense, not cash-grabs - and for policies that actually improve air quality without punishing the very people who keep our city moving.
“We all want cleaner air - but it has to be achieved fairly. The outer-London ULEZ expansion has made no difference to emissions, yet it’s hurt those already struggling with the cost of living. Croydon Conservatives will keep fighting for a fair deal for local motorists, small businesses and working families.
“It’s time for Labour in Croydon to put politics aside and stand with us - and with the thousands of residents who’ve been unfairly hit by this failed policy. If they care about fairness, they’ll join our call to scrap the expansion and stop punishing hardworking people for nothing.”
- Jason Perry, Conservative Mayor of Croydon
