Residents who regularly use the narrow, wooded section of Old Lodge Lane will may have noticed that it has been the subject of ongoing work over the past few years.
Since 2022, we have been working with residents and council officers to tackle a number of problems along this stretch of road, including persistent fly-tipping, drainage and flooding issues and the deteriorating road surface.
There have been a number of improvements along the way. Fly-tips have been cleared more quickly, new signage and barriers have been installed to deter further dumping, and drainage and gully works have helped to address the regular flooding near the Wattendon pub. A major clean-up of the wooded section was also carried out last year. See more details here.
Most of the resurfacing of the longer stretch Old Lodge Lane was completed previously, but the wooded ‘narrows’ had to wait because of other major drainage works in the area and the need to divert traffic. Highways subsequently confirmed that microsurfacing would need to be carried out during the warmer months. See further details here.
We're therefore pleased that the final section will now be microsurfaced on 21–22 August. The road will be closed to vehicles while the works take place, although pedestrian access will be maintained and the 312 bus service won't be affected. See more information here.
We know that fly tipping continues in the area and it has been flagged for Mayor Perry’s zero-tolerance crackdown: residents urged to name and shame fly-tippers. We encourage residents to engage with this push and continue to report any fly tips via the Love Clean Streets app – not only does this get the fly tips cleaned up, but provides vital intelligence for council officers cracking down on hot spots. This is a good example of why we continue to raise local issues with council officers. What started with concerns about fly-tipping and flooding has resulted in a series of improvements to make this important route cleaner, safer and better maintained.
