Bourneview Level Crossing in Kenley to temporarily close for safety upgrade

Passage leading to Bourneview crossing

Following the tragic incident at Bourneview Level Crossing earlier this year, Croydon Council and Network Rail have now confirmed a programme of safety improvements at the crossing which we wanted to share with Kenley’s residents.

The accident deeply affected the community and in the weeks that followed, many residents, including the family, shared their concerns and sorrow. More than 4,000 people signed a petition calling for the crossing to be closed whilst safety improvements were made.

With the strong support of Croydon's Mayor, council officers investigated options to provide a safer passage for crossing, such as a footbridge. This was not technically feasible due to lack of space on either side of the railway line to build one. As an alternative, officers have worked closely with Network Rail to agree and expedite new safety features. A letter is being sent to residents confirming that the crossing will be temporarily closed from 11 August 2025 until December 2025. This closure will allow for the installation of Miniature Stop Lights (MSLs) which provide a visual warning of approaching trains via red/green colour lights along with an audible tone.

This closure is a key part of the wider response to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch’s ongoing investigation. While the disruption will be felt by those who use the crossing regularly, the decision has been made with safety as the top priority.

Pedestrian diversions will be in place via Stumps Lane and Hayes Lane bridges. Mayor Perry has also asked Network Rail to explore options for a step-free crossing at Kenley Station, as the hump-back bridge on Hayes Lane can be difficult for those with mobility issues.

We continue to send our deepest condolences to the family and everyone affected by this heart-breaking accident.
