Kenley Councillors are delighted to confirm that the safety concerns delaying the implementation of the 434 bus route have now been resolved. Transport for London (TfL) have provided written confirmation that from:

29th March we will be commencing with the planned changes to the 434-bus route which will serve a new line of route through the Kenley Ward in the London Borough of Croydon and will operate as follows:

  • Right turn into Higher Drive
  • Continue onto Cullesden Road
  • Continue onto Firs Road
  • Right turn onto Wattenden Road
  • Left turn onto Hayes Lane
  • Continue onto Park Road
  • Continue onto Hayes Lane
  • Right turn onto Godstone Road

The 434 will operate as a hail and ride service through this corridor (along Higher Drive, Cullesden Road, Firs Road, Wattenden Road, Hayes Lane, Park Road and Hayes Lane again).

Getting this route up and running has required collaborative working between TfL and Croydon Council, with support from Ward Councillors, KENDRA (the Kenley’s Residents Association), London Assembly Member, Neil Garratt, Cabinet Member Cllr Scott Roche, and many local residents who have been calling for this service for many years.

Initially planned for early 2024, the route faced an unexpected delay due to safety issues identified during a final test run. TfL determined that the bend on Wattendon Road presented line-of-sight challenges, preventing the safe operation of the bus.

Yellow lines on Wattenden Road to enable bus to run

To address this and following a statutory consultation, yellow lines were installed along the problematic stretch of Wattendon Road on Tuesday, 7th January. A subsequent test run on Friday, 10th January confirmed that the safety measures were effective, clearing the way for the service to move forward.

Kenley councillors have worked closely alongside Croydon Council and TfL to maintain momentum on this vital project. We’ve ensured that all parties understood the importance of providing public transport to this underserved part of Kenley. We’re confident that the new 434 bus service will be a welcome addition for Kenley residents. While we await final confirmation from TfL, the route is expected to follow the map below.

This service marks a significant improvement in local transport connectivity, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community.
