Planning permission granted - 7 Croham Valley Road

I attended planning committee this evening (Wednesday) to object with residents to a development which will be numbered 7 Croham Valley Road. In the past a refusal was given for development of this site, but unfortunately tonight regardless of what local residents wanted it was approved, so the house will be built. The speech I gave against the application was as follows:-
“I am objecting on two points
Firstly, this is back garden development so not welcome and secondly this is out of character for the area.
I have heard on many occasions refusals for back garden development reasons and some have been made in this very area. Back garden development encroaches slowly over time and impinges on the lives of those who have resided in the area for many years and appreciate the quality of life they have.
In this part of my ward, Ballards we are very fortunate to have large houses and a comfortable way of life but and this shouldn’t change just because some people think this is too green or too suburban. We should embrace the differing areas of Croydon and their individual character and ensure they all have their own identity and not prejudice them because they aren’t what other people have.
I would urge you to consider the character of Ballards which has remained largely unchanged for many years and ask that you don’t grant permission as this development will open the way for other developers to cut down trees and foliage which everyone has enjoyed, and squeeze large houses on to relatively small plots on steep banks.
I therefore urge you to consider refusal.”
