Hamsey Way service road

Regular readers of this column will remember that we have been trying to get the service road behind the Hamsey Green parade (accessed off Hamsey Way) made more secure and fly tip resistant for some years. Because the access road is private, rather than highway, this has not been an easy problem to deal with and has involved getting the businesses behind the issue.
Recently we heard that council enforcement officers had secured the agreement of the traders and landowners to put in an 'alleygate', which would deal with the fly tip problem. That was due to be installed last week, but we heard that the gate which had arrived was the wrong size! Below is the text of the officer's email:
Further to our recent conversation I have had to stop the installation of the gate today at Hamsey Way because it is the wrong size. The residents and businesses requested a gate which would be wide enough to allow access to refuse trucks and large delivery vehicles. The required size for this was a minimum width of 3.8m but the gate which has been produced is only 3m wide.
The best estimate for this issue to be resolved and the gate overhauled and installed is approx. 4-5 weeks from now.
It's a bit frustrating, but at least we know the solution will be with us soon - or at least, the solution to the fly tip problem. The other half of the problem is the rats caused by the careless disposal of food waste from the restaurants and take aways, but we hope that the gating of the road and the fact that it will then be fully apparent that any waste down there has come from the businesses will improve disposal standards and eliminate the rat problem.
