Ice Cream - Don't We All Love It

The matter of the intention to have a borough wide ban on the sale from ice cream vans caused some amusement amongst colleagues at council last night. Perhaps that is because they found the work officers have been asked to undertake to ban ice cream vans from trading in the borough from anywhere except designated sites.seems so unreasonable.
The whole point of the ice cream van is that it delivers ice cream to individual roads, it is not a shop and therefore does not operate from a fixed site. That certainly would defeat the object.
The exact wording of the email to a major retailer in Sanderstead states: "We have made some progress in that Croydon Licensing Officers are looking at a ban on Ice Cream Sales borough wide and permits to trade in specific areas".
This caused some consternation amongst residents and friends and of course young children. Apart from the removal of this important service to residents it would of course undoubedtly have a major financial impact on this small retailer.
Do you like ice cream? I do, the 99 is a favourite of mine and something I particularly enjoy on a hot summers day as do many residents in Croydon.
I see the ice cream van as an iconic business, part of our heritage so when I received an email which had been sent out to a major retailer in my ward quite frankly I was shocked and somewhat in a state of disbelief. But no it is quite true.
Some of the comments I have received directed at the administration are as follows:
From the children:
Don’t you like ice cream?
What has Mr Whippy done to offend you?
Don’t you like children?
Is it because Mr Tonibell has the same name
Is it because you don’t like the music?
Is it because you didn’t get a flake in your 99?
And from the adults:
This is outragous
Everyone loves ice cream
The ice cream man is an institution in our borough
Are you going to consult
This will destroy their business
How is this going to be policed
Is this why the leader has brought in another two members of staff into his office
Are they going to be the ice cream police?
We on this side of this fence love ice cream and the ice cream vans. And as the mayor also said her children love ice cream too - who doesn't.
The leader and other councillors seemed totally oblivious to the work going on behind the scenes of an administration that they so call lead. I have taken this matter to director level in a hope that this work will stop and we can all enjoy summer knowing that if we want an ice cream they will be ready with their cones!
