Litter Picking in Croham Ward

Your Conservative Croham Councillors were out litter picking in part of the ward on Saturday 11th January Covering Birdhurst Avenue / Gardens, South Park Hill and Croham Road. The Cllrs were assisted by the local community; we fully appreciate their effort in keeping the area in South Croydon as clean as possible and we would like to thank all who contributed on the day. We will always endeavour to support the local community by organising the Council’s recycling bags, and the pick-up of the recycling / landfill materials by Veolia.
With the recent bad weather we expected to pick up quite a lot of recyclable items which may have been blow out of the recycling boxes. We are happy to report that the Conservative Council has done a tremendous job in clearing up after the bad weather we experienced over the last few weeks. The pavements and kerb side were clear apart from a few items we picked up.
On recycling the Conservative Council under Cabinet Member Cllr Phil Thomas has continued to improve its recycling rates every year from 16% in 2006 to nearly 50% now. On families or individuals who do not recycle, the Council’s approach is to educate when there is a particular issue around recycling; this has the benefit of monitoring how families recycle in order to support them for the long term. During Councillors canvassing and surgery sessions if families request extra recycling bins, we are happy to oblige so long as they are used extensively for recycling.
Croydon is fortunate in having 3 recycling centres in the Borough, yet the Ward Councillors have reported fly tipping in the hot spot areas of the Ward. We would like to thank Council officers for their prompt response in getting the items removed.
I recently reported fly tipping which was removed the following day; the council have allegedly found evidence to fine those responsible. We must send a clear message to those who fly tip; if they are caught the council will use all their powers to seek compensation through a fixed penalty fine. Fly tipping is unacceptable and there is no excuse to do so.
If you have any particular problem to discuss which are Council related, we will be holding surgery on Saturday 1st February at St Augustine’s Church, St Augustine’s Avenue, South Croydon at 10am – 11.30am
