Westfield/Hammerson Scheme Gets Planning Approval

Fairfield residents wake up this morning to the fantastic news that the £1 billion Westfield/Hammerson regeneration scheme for our town centre has been approved by the Council’s Planning Committee. The plan will see the existing Whitgift Centre replaced by 1.4 million sq ft of modern shopping space, leisure facilities and between 400 and 600 new homes, creating up to 5,000 new jobs. The developers plans include bringing in a brand new department store right in the heart of Croydon.
This is a once in a generation opportunity to completely transform Croydon, bringing direct benefits to the residents of Fairfield. You will soon be living next to an iconic retail-cum-leisure complex which will bring visitors and shoppers from all over the region to Croydon. The proposed homes will bring in new professionals and residents to our town centre, who will take ownership of the place and form a new community in the heart of Fairfield. We look forward to welcoming them, as we have welcomed the new residents to Saffron Square. Finally we will see improvements to the public realm and the transport system in Croydon town centre, something local residents can be proud of.
These are really exciting times for Croydon, and I am sure all Fairfield residents will welcome the scheme which will bring investment, jobs and badly needed regeneration. Your local councillors will continue to keep you informed of developments as the scheme progresses.
