'Save Our Fairfield' campaign featured on London Live

The 'Save Our Fairfield' campaign organised a highly successful community protest sing-along outside Fairfield Halls on Saturday.

Conducted by Darrell Davidson, the hundreds of Croydon's arts-supporters who attended in the drizzle sang 'FAIRFIELD, HEART OF CROYDON' to the tune of Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March no. 1 (better known as Land of Hope and Glory).

Here are the words:

Councillors of Croydon, Hear our urgent plea,
Listen to our worries, Which we tell to thee.
Soon to close for ages? Plans on us imposed!
Fairfield is OUR venue, HOME for all our shows,
Fairfield is OUR venue, HOME for all our shows.

Built through gen’rous giving, Halls that all enjoy,
Stage for diverse talents, Locals do employ,
Young and old are welcome, This is understood,
Fairfield is OUR halls and Made for COMMON good,
Fairfield is OUR halls and Made for COMMON good.

The lyrics neatly sum up the 'ask' of virtually all the Halls' users, which is that they be able to continue to stage the plethora of community events they run throughout the refurb. This is perfectly doable, if it were not for the fact that the council is determined to privatise the Fairfield and hand it over to a commercial group to use it purely for shows which make a profit. Sadly that doesn't include all the schools and community groups which give their children and young adults such fantastic experience in staging their performances.

The performance was captured by the media and you can see the London Live TV feature below.
