Croydon Conservatives back Londonís National Park City campaign

Each of Croydon’s 10 Conservative-held wards have endorsed a city-wide campaign to make London the UK’s first National Park City.

All 30 Conservative Councillors have signed up to support the proposal which aims to add Greater London to the UK’s 15 other unique and inspiring National Parks.

Turning our capital into a National Park City will help:

  • Ensure 100% of Londoners have free and easy access to high-quality green space
  • Connect 100% of London’s children to nature
  • Make the majority of London physically green
  • Improve London’s air and water quality, year on year
  • Improve the richness, connectivity and biodiversity of London’s habitats
  • Inspire the building of affordable green homes
  • Inspire new business activities
  • Promote London as a Green World City
  • Nurture a shared National Park City identity for Londoners

London is home to 8.6 million people as well as more than 8.3 million trees and 13,000 species of wildlife. The campaign believes that by working together to gain the support of at least two thirds of London’s London, we can all create something new: a National Park City.

Cllr Jason Perry, Shadow Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Planning & Regeneration, commented: “Croydon is the most populated London borough and has over 120 parks and open spaces. We felt it vitally important to support this initiative that will protect and promote our precious green spaces for generations to come.”

To date none of Croydon Labour’s 40 Councillors has chosen to support this campaign. We very much hope that despite their plans to de-designate Shirley’s precious Metropolitan Open Land and their refusal to hold a public meeting about it, that they will still join us in supporting this important endeavour.
