Protecting our unique heritage

The borough’s heritage is set to be more closely protected by new and updated conservation area plans and a borough-wide conservation guide to development and maintenance.

Following eight weeks’ consultation last year, the conservation areas of Chatsworth Road, Croham Manor Road, The Waldrons and Wellesley Road (north) now each have their own conservation area appraisal and management plan (CAAMP).

They are among 21 designated conservation areas in Croydon, for which appraisals and management plans are being written or updated.

The four CAAMPs and the Conservation Area General Guidance (CAGG) were approved by the cabinet on 11 February. They will be formal supplementary planning documents (SPDs), which developers, property owners, residents and anyone with an interest in these areas must adhere to.

The remaining conservation areas will be assessed in groups and will go through the same consultation process before the council adopts CAAMPs for each of them.

Cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport, Councillor Jason Perry said: “This is the first time that we’ve had a strategic approach to our conservation areas. This will help us protect the gradual and cumulative erosion of our valued and important conservation areas while we also forge ahead with the regeneration of our town centre and high streets.”

It is intended to produce CAAMPs for the following conservation areas over the next 18 months:

- Central Croydon
- Church Street
- East India Estate
- Norbury Estate
- Norwood Grove
- Parish Church
- St Bernards
- Upper Norwood Triangle
- Addington Village
- Beulah Hill
- Bradmore Green
- Church Road
- Harold Road

The following areas’ existing plans will be reviewed and updated if necessary:

- South Norwood
- The Webb Estate
- Upper Woodcote Village
- Kenley Aerodrome
