Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Learners, Cllr Tim Pollard, has welcomed the commitment from Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove to continue to support investment in our schools’ fabric, albeit using a different funding mechanism.
The secretary of State described the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) process as “bureaucratic and inefficient” with much money being siphoned off into consultancy costs.
Cllr Tim Pollard said “Whilst we are naturally disappointed that the economic outlook means that the Government is rethinking its investment strategy, I am absolutely confident that we will be able to make a compelling case for investment in Croydon’s schools once the new mechanism is announced.
“We have done a huge amount of work to develop a strong business case for investment in the schools estate and we know exactly what needs to be done. This work means that we will be well placed to bid for future funding on a school-by-school basis when the detail of the new system is announced after the Spending Review in the autumn.
“So whilst the cancellation of BSF is a setback, it is by no means the end of investment in our schools”
