New ‘Open Cabinet’ system hailed as a great success
Croydon Council’s Executive Cabinet met for the first time on Monday under its new open format.
Under the old system, inherited from the previous Labour administration, only members of the Cabinet and their shadows could contribute to the meeting. Under the new system, any member of the Council may now question the relevant Cabinet member on any of the items raised in the meeting. Monday’s meeting saw a lively debate with many councillors, who would previously not have had a voice, able to make a contribution.
Councillor Mike Fisher, Leader of the Council and chair of Cabinet Meetings, said “I am really delighted that the changes to the format have enabled back benchers from both sides to make a contribution to the debate. For example, Cllr Susan Winborn of Fairfield ward and Cllr Stuart Collins of Broad Green ward were able to make a real contribution to the debate about the East and West Croydon masterplans, which directly affects their wards. I think the new format marks a great step forward for local democracy and I look forward to many more contributions from all sides in the future.”
