Following the local elections on Thursday 6th May, the Conservatives have retained control of Croydon Council, with 37 councillors elected from a total of 70.
The turnout was 64%, which is exceptionally high for a local election. The high turnout was caused by the holding of a General Election on the same day.
Of particular note was that the Conservatives won a seat in New Addington from Labour, the first time New Addington has had a Conservative councillor in forty years.
Council leader Mike Fisher said: "I am delighted that we have kept control of the council.
"Four seats is a workable majority and it means we can continue to deliver the good quality services, sound economic policies and low council tax that we have been doing for the past four years.
"It is obviously disappointing that we have lost some very good councillors, as a result of the high turnout. In the case of one of them in Addiscombe, Maria Garcia lost by just 50 votes.
"We always knew that when it was announced the local and general elections would take place on the same day, we would be in for a diffucult time in the north of borough. However, the election of Tony Pearson as a councillor in New Addington is a real step forward.
"We are also absolutely delighted to have held Waddon ward with an increased majority, which is a tribute to the hard work put in by our ward team there, Tony Harris, Clare Hilley and Simon Hoar".
