Local Election 2006
Your Upper Norwood Candidates

A little about the team.....

Robert Askey Robert is a lifelong resident of Norwood and has attended local schools. He worked for several years in one of London’s busiest public libraries and is currently training to be a primary school teacher. Through this experience, Robert fully understands the importance of public services which are both well-funded and well-run. As Deputy Chairman of our local Conservative party Robert works with local people to campaign for a better Croydon.

George Filbey George has been a community activist for the past 25 years having been a member and chairman of various local business and community organisations over the years. During this time he has campaigned on many issues that are important to the residents of Croydon. These include campaigning for: more car parking facilities particularly in South and Upper Norwood; better public transport facilities in the north of the Borough; improvement in local amenities. George was recently Chairman of the Management Committee of the Socco Cheta Youth Centre until it was closed down by the Labour Council as part of their Youth Service closure programme.

Clare Hilley Having lived and been educated in Norwood, Clare works as an Executive for Haymarket Business Publications, the largest private magazine publisher in the UK. She has been described by many as a ‘true Croydonian’ as she is an active community member and works hard to develop and progress the local area. In her spare time she enjoys flying and whilst at University she was an Officer Cadet in the RAF.

What will we do if elected?

  • We will maintain the character of Upper Norwood by ensuring new developments are of the highest quality, are in keeping with the area and only allowed where the infrastructure can cope.
  • We will ensure that the streets and parks are clean and safe for residents to use and enjoy.
  • We will ensure that recycling is made easy and accessible to all residents, whether living in houses or flats.
  • We will support local businesses and look at constructive ways of enhancing the Crystal Palace Triangle.
  • We will keep Croydon’s element of the Council Tax rises to below 4% and aim to reduce them further to less than inflation when finances allow.
