Local Election 2006
Your Purley Candidates

A little about the team.....

Graham Bass is a long-time resident of Purley. Married with four children, he is now retired from a career in the oil industry and computing. A Purley Councillor since 1992, Graham is deputy spokesman for Social Services. He is also a member of the Healthy Croydon Partnership, Education Scrutiny, and the new Purley Hospital Steering Group. Graham serves as a governor of Woodcote High and is President of the Purley and Woodcote Residents’ Association.

Derek Millard, a retired Actuary and Stockbroker, has always lived in Purley. He is married to Bunty. A Councillor since 1986 he was Deputy Mayor of Croydon in 1992/93. He was the founding Chairman of the Purley Neighbourhood Partnership, enjoys being a Woodcote High School governor, and is a Past President of Purley Rotary Club. He sits on the Corporate Services Committee and on its Pensions Sub-Committee. He looks forward with pleasure to representing Purley residents for the next four years.

Donald Speakman has for many years been an enthusiastic campaigner for the development of Purley. He is a Management Consultant, resident of Purley and is married with one son. As a member of the Scrutiny and Overview Committee, Donald has held the Council to account for the benefit of Purley residents. If re-elected on the 4th May he will continue to fight, as your elected representative, for more Council resources for Purley and to end the waste of Council taxpayers’ money.

What will we do if elected?

  • A new Purley Hospital to provide a wide range of local out-patient facilities, including a Minor Injuries Unit and adequate parking.
  • A Safer Neighbourhood Team, with a police sergeant in charge, to lead the fight against local crime, graffiti and anti-social behaviour.
  • The derelict High Street ex-Sainsbury’s site to be comprehensively developed to give us a new pool and leisure facilities, library, improved parking, well-designed housing and shops.
  • Comprehensive development of the old Sainsbury’s ‘Island Site’ to provide high quality community facilities, housing and shops.
  • Oppose the over-development of Purley, the construction of high-density tower blocks and ‘backland’ housing, with inadequate amenities and parking.
  • Support for improved parking provision for local business and shoppers.
  • Allow for residents to take their general rubbish along with re-cyclable items to the Purley Oaks Recycling Centre.
