Local Election 2006
Your Coulsdon West Candidates

A little about the team.....

Gavin Barwell Gavin has been a councillor for eight years, during which time he has campaigned for the area to get a fair share of resources from Croydon Council. He works for the Conservative Party as its national Director of Campaigning and is particularly interested in how new technology can make it easier for politicians to communicate with the people who elect them and vice versa and thereby help politicians do a better job representing people’s views. If elected, the team will produce a monthly email bulletin to keep people up to date with what they are doing. If you would like to receive this, email gbarwell@conservatives.com. Outside of politics, Gavin is a huge sports fan and enjoys travelling. He is married to Karen and has two young sons, Jack and Sam.

Brian Cakebread After a long career working in many parts of the world, Brian returned to Croydon where he runs his own consultancy and sales promotions business. His 3 children are adults themselves now, so he and his wife keep active by regularly walking their English Springer spaniel. His other interests include reading, golf and playing the guitar. Brian has been working with the Conservative Party for several years and with an interest in politics he decided to do something about it by standing for election as a Councillor in 2006.

David Osland David Osland has been a Croydon Councillor since 1994. He has lived in the Borough for many years and in Coulsdon West ward since 1980. His particular political interests revolve around crime and public protection, and town planning. A member of the Rotary Club of Purley, he is also a governor of two local schools. He also spends some of his time acting as a home vetter for Last Chance Animal Rescue. His many personal interests include his classic Triumph Stag car, motorcycling, gardening, music and theatre.

What we will do if elected

Croydon’s Labour Council doesn’t care about Purley and Coulsdon. Cuts in street cleaning frequency, the closure of the public toilets in Coulsdon town centre, the lack of investment in the town centres and the sale of the old Council Offices all speak volumes of a Council that is only interested in the north of the Borough. A Conservative Council will offer a fair deal to all parts of the Borough. In addition to our key pledges for the Borough as a whole, which will address problems with crime and over-development, we make the following local commitments.

Coulsdon Town Centre  The completion of the Inner Relief Road offers a unique opportunity to regenerate Coulsdon town centre. A Conservative Council will:

  • listen to what local residents and businesses have to say - for example, about the need for affordable parking - rather than ignoring them
  • work with the private sector to get key sites like the Red Lion, which is currently an eyesore, redeveloped
  • re-open public toilets in the town centre
  • take effective action to prevent travellers from continually re-occupying Lion Green Road car park.

Policing  We will campaign for a fair share of police resources and to keep Kenley Police Station open. We will also introduce a new Neighbourhood Enforcement Officer team to complement the police and help control anti-social behaviour. See the centre spread of this leaflet for more details on how this will work.

Purley Town Centre  Purley town centre is divided by two major trunk roads and has suffered from the opening and continued expansion of Tesco’s. A Conservative Council will:

  • campaign for Transport for London to address the congestion at Purley Cross, which is only going to get worse once the Inner Relief Road opens
  • upgrade Purley pool
  • press for work to start on the redevelopment of Purley Hospital
  • work with the community to regenerate the town centre, particularly the “island” site and the old Sainsbury’s site on the High Street

Cane Hill  The Cane Hill site offers a huge opportunity to provide affordable homes, job opportunities and new community facilities for the people of Coulsdon. It has remained un-developed for years because the Council has tried to insist on a science park. At last, there is a real prospect of redevelopment with the South London & Maudsley Trust confirming that they wish to vacate the site and ownership of the site being transferred to English Partnerships, a government body that oversees major regeneration projects. A Conservative Council will consult the people of Coulsdon and ensure that the redevelopment of this important site is in tune with their wishes.
